As a continuation to the previous workshops and in light of the approaching completion of the project, the Croatian national workshop "Solutions for reducing the risk of floods based on nature in the Bregana river basin as part of the RECONECT project" was held on Friday 17.5.2024. in Zagreb. RECONECT aims to rapidly enhance the European reference framework on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for hydro-meteorological risk reduction by demonstrating, referencing, upscaling and exploiting large-scale NBS in rural and natural areas. RECONECT draws upon a network of carefully selected Demonstrators and Collaborators that cover a wide and diverse range of local conditions, geographic characteristics, institutional/governance structures and social/cultural settings to successfully upscale NBS throughout Europe and Internationally. The workshop was opened by Mr. Dario Ban, director of Proning DHI, on behalf of the organizers, followed by an introductory presentation by the head of the Croatian RECONECT team, Božidar Deduš. The introductions were followed by a presentation by on NBS in the Bregana river basin Ratko Ramuščak, and a presentation by Draženka Kvesić with the topic of the most common obstacles in Croatia that hinder the implementation of NBS solutions and the enablers that can reduce or even remove the considered barriers. Representatives of: - Croatian waters The participants of the workshop assessed which enablers and to what extent could help overcome the barriers that slow down and/or prevent the application of the NBS in Croatia. At the previous workshops (December 2022 and February 2023), a number of obstacles was identified, 4 of which were selected for further analysis. Each of the 4 barriers had several possible enablers that could help with overcoming them, and their potential use and effects were analyzed and assessed at the national workshop. The identified barriers were as follows: - Barrier 1: Lack of sense of urgency, As a result of a survey, joint proposals and through discussion, the participants of the workshop singled out the following as the most significant enablers. To overcome barrier 1: Creating incentive schemes and highlighting quick-win NBS projects that demonstrate immediate benefits, encouraging early adoption and investment. To overcome barrier 2: Unlocking public and private funding to enable NBS investments, merging complementary funding streams into single programs that prioritize NBS, and promoting innovative financing mechanisms such as payment for ecosystem services. To overcome barrier 3: Developing innovative compensation mechanisms that go beyond financial payments, such as land-for-land exchanges, land pooling, or long-term benefit-sharing arrangements that allow landowners to maintain a connection to their ancestral land. To overcome barrier 4: Implementing demonstration projects that showcase the successful integration of NBS into human-dominated landscapes, emphasizing their aesthetic appeal and functionality.

In the period from September 11-15, 2022, Proning's experts Dražen Navratil and Draženka Kvesić participated during the IWA World Water Congress held in Copenhagen, on the topic of „Water in smart liveable cities“, at the booth of our long-term partner the Danish Hydraulic Institute, one of several world-class institutes from domains of water modeling and resources management.
During the conference, we had numerous contacts with congress visitors. A large number of participants and their interest pointed to the importance of quality solutions in the domain of smart cities, especially from the aspect of applying digitally supported solutions. New technologies are increasingly enabling the application of new quality solutions to water problems in cities.
We further learn and work on knowledge maintenance and continue to apply "state of the art" solutions in our practice.
Herewith we would like to express our special thanks to all domestic and foreign colleagues, visitors to the DHI and Proning booth.

On 23.03.2022, the project " Study of Evaluation and Monitoring of the Effectiveness of the Sewerage Network Construction Project Implementation and Analysis of the Efficiency of Wastewater Treatment Plants Operation in the City of Poreč " (Study Poreč) was presented. The holder of the study was our designing company Proning DHI with the participation of the IHE Delft Foundation Netherlands, IMDC Belgium, Ruđer Bošković Institute, Zagreb and the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, Zagreb.
In the wider area of Poreč, with the co-financing from EU funds, a project of reconstruction and upgrade of the existing drainage system has been realized with the construction of four treatment plants with a total value of 67.2 million euros. The Poreč study has been conducted as a complementary study in order to improve the understanding of working conditions, interactions and efficiency of the integrated system (sewage - treatment plants - sea) in different conditions, as well as to increase the knowledge and skills of staff managing the system. Within the Poreč Study, research works have been conducted on the basis of which the models of drainage systems, wastewater treatment plants and the coastal sea have been developed, which simulated various scenarios of operation of these integrated systems and their impact on the environment.

The project commissioner is UNDP with beneficiares the Sava River Basin Agency from Sarajevo, the Federal Meteorological Institute of Sarajevo, the Banja Luka Republic Hydrological Institute and the Banja Luka and Public Agency “Vode Srpske”.
MIKE Hydro and MIKE OPERATIONS (DHI) will be used in the project. By establishing a real-time flood forecasting system for the Vrbas River, it will be linked to the pre-built forecast system on the Una and Sana rivers in BiH.
Both operating systems will greatly contribute to a better understanding of the development of floods, and by proding an hourly forecasts of dicharges and levels will allow for a prolongation and better utilization of the important period before arrival of the flood wave to be utilized for better preparation of immediate physical flood protection measures and mitigate the risk of flooding and potential damage.
The project is a continuation of the 2017 project. in which participated Proning Dhi with the Zavod za vodoprivredu Bjeljina, Zavod za vodoprivredu Sarajevo and the "Jaroslav Černi" Institute from Belgrade. The project was realized under the title “Development of a Flood hazard and Flood Risk Map in the Vrbas River Basin.

Company Proning DHI, Zagreb, was granted organization of the next International Conference of Ecological Informatics – ICEI 2016, to be held in Dubrovnik, Croatia in fall 2016. The previous conference was held in Nanjing, China in October 2014. which attracted scientists and experts from all over the world. Editorial Advisory Board of the International Society of Ecological Informatics (ISEI), headed by Prof. Friedrich Recknagel from the University of Adelaide, Australia, granted organization of ICEI 2016 to Proning DHI on January 19, 2015.
Proning DHI see it as a great honour and obligation not only for the company itself but also to our country Croatia, as the concern over topics ISEI is covering are global and influence all human beings and all of the nature on the Earth.
Ecological informatics is focused on all aspects of ecoinformatics, computational ecology and systems ecology. It takes into account the data-intensive nature of ecology and the precious information content of ecological data in view of global environmental and climate change. It is interdisciplinary at the crossover between ecology and informatics. Ecological informatics focuses on recent developments in sensor-based data acquisition, internet-based data archiving and sharing, data assimilation, inductive reasoning and forecasting of ecological data.
Typical topics of Ecological Informatics cover novel concepts and tools for the acquisition, management, analysis and synthesis of ecological data including genomic and paleoecological data, understanding ecosystem functioning and evolution, and informing decisions on environmental issues like sustainability, climate change and biodiversity.
The first announcement and invitation to participate is underway and is expected latest in April 2015.

The project aims at developing a pilot operating system to flood forecasting in real time and early warning systems for the Sava River from the Slovenian border to Sisak. This is an important non-structural measure as part of the integrated approach to flood protection system harmonized with the EU Floods Directive. One of the key activities is the component of knowledge transfer for the employees of the Croatian Waters and the DHMZ. The contract will be implemented within 12 months on the basis of operational hydro-meteorological forecast from DHMZ and existing databases, information and other contributions from CW. The concept and methodology as well as selected numerical models (MIKE 11 and MIKE FF CUSTOMIZED REAL TIME) developed by DHI, which will be used in the project were applied to already-made system for flood forecasting in Slovenia and neighboring countries Austria, Hungary, Italy, but also on large river basins in the world.
